I was browsing through a couple of the race listing, websites looking for something fun and different to add to my calendar, when I came upon a race that is to be held on my birthday this year! And it just so happens that my 44th birthday falls on Mother’s Day this year, so that would mean no coffee & newspaper in bed, or “delicious” child-cooked pancakes like in previous years. No! Instead I would be swimming ½ mile in a lake with stinky fish, biking in 80°F + temps with 2000 other crazy mothers, and running a 5K while trying not to chafe. Does this sound like fun? I am not so sure! For anyone who is familiar with triathlons, I am, of course, talking about the Danskin Triathlon in Orlando. This is a women-only sprint distance event taking place at Fort Wilderness inside the Disney compound. Intrigued? Read on…
After I started researching this event, I found out that this year the Danskin Triathlon is now teaming up with SheRox Triathlon Series and they have now made it a full sprint distance. In previous years, this race was a ¼ mile swim, 10 mile bike, and 2 mile run. I think I like that length better! But I think a sprint distance would be a good challenge for me and a great accomplishment on my 44th birthday.
So where to start? Well, I started researching triathlon training programs, and it sure seems like a lot more work than training for a run. I mean they practice transitioning from one event to the other and invest in fancy triathlon suits, biking shoes and expensive bikes. Makes me wonder if now is the time for me to try this? Can we afford to invest in this sport when I don’t even know if I am going to like it or not? Do I want to commit all this training time to swimming and biking when my true love is running? You see my dilemma, right?
I spoke to a friend of mine who has done this race in the past and is registered for this year. She did say that the swim is alot tougher than before. But she also said that, as for equipment, you see all levels. So my little beach cruiser might work afterall! I really am not in this to win it! I am as the cliche says…”Just in it to finish!” I mean when was the last time I actually swam more than one lap of free style…never! Have I ever biked more than 10 miles? I don’t know! How do you tell? Is there a “bike-ometer” that keeps track of that for me, or do I actually have to mark out my rides? You see, I do not know what I am doing, and yet I think I am talking myself into it! Is this crazy? Am I nuts? Or am I just a middle-age woman trying to stay healthy and active. Hmmm, does the term midlife crisis fit here?
I will let you know, my decision!
OK…that was fast…I’m IN!!!!!!!!
