Girls Vacation vs. Family Vacation

DSC_0155Based on the title of this article, you are probably thinking this is a no brainer, girls vacation wins by a landslide. But I have to tell you, I think it’s a tie. Let me explain…

So, my girlfriends from elementary school (I’d say grade school but that makes me sound REALLY old) and I have been meeting at my parents’ condo in Naples, FL for the last 12 years for some rest and relaxation. It started out as a weekend away, but as the jobs got more stressful and the kids got more demanding, we lengthened it a little each year, working up to a nice long week.

What do we do on this week of relaxation? Absolutely NOTHING!!! No really! We sit on the lanai (penthouse balcony overlooking the Gulf) and reminisce, ponder our lives, read and laugh…A LOT! We’ve decided that the first day is jammie day…we don’t get dressed for the entire day. Haven’t you always wanted to do that? It’s SO nice! We decompress and get reacquainted with each other, since we usually haven’t seen each other for months and sometimes a whole year. The rest of the week is a free for all…weDSC01519.JPG

  • read books…wooohoo! But with no interruptions the books are so much better!
  • have drinks on the lanai at sunset…and for many hours before and after!
  • read magazines…all kinds…anything from Real Simple to Cosmo
  • swim, actually we don’t swim…we read in the pool
  • take afternoon naps…aaahhh
  • go to the movies-some good, some bad…really bad
  • make many trips to the grocery store for more magazines and books, oh and maybe some food
  • make an occasional trip to a restaurant, so we don’t have to cook and cleanDSC_0172
  • spill our drinks on the lanai at sunset…and for many hours before and after!
  • stay up late laughing so hard we cry…this is my favorite!

So after all that fun, how can my family trip live up to that, you ask? Well it has to do with timing! You see, a few years ago I realized that it would be a good, no… great idea to have my husband and the kids come down while I was still at the beach. This way I get 2 straight weeks at the beach! Genius!! Why did it take me so long to figure this out?! (don’t answer that) Now I take the girls to the airport and go back to the condo and get rid of all the incriminating evidence…I wouldn’t want them to think Mom is a lush…hahaha…and wait for the family to arrive!

Yes, it takes me a little time to readjust to “MOM” mode, but eventually I come back to Earth and we have a nice relaxing week at the beach as a family! We…

  • take walks on the beach
  • play board and card games
  • read books and magazines…Family Circle…Good Housekeeping…Teen Vogue
  • swim…yes we actually swim
  • do puzzles…well…I do the puzzle and they fight over who is going to put the last piece in place
  • still make many trips to the grocery…did I mention I have a teenage boy who loves to eat!
  • eat at a restaurant once a day, so Mom doesn’t have to cook…nice!
  • take afternoon naps…there is nothing better!

As this second week comes to a close, I am ready to get home and get my life in order! I have had a week of girlfriend fun and a week of family togetherness. All that’s missing is a week of alone time!  Maybe next year I’ll add another week! HeeHee!

Mom CAN Run…But She Chooses NOT To!

DSC_2838Yes I have been a SLUG!!! I haven’t been training…at all! And boy can I feel it! I am flabby and feel really out of shape and my mood is up and down like an elevator! Yeh…my husband and kids are loving it….not! But in my defense, I have been traveling A LOT!!! And I tend to drop the training (a nice way of saying “I don’t run”) when I am traveling. I do take my shoes and other running gear, but have yet to use them since my navigation problem in Munich. Hee Hee!

So, here I am packing yet again and, yes, the running shoes & clothes, ipod and Nike Plus kit are in the suitcase…still! We’ll see if I have better luck at the lanai, than in Europe and at NSB. I doubt it! We tend to TALK about doing  A LOT on the lanai, but don’t actually DO anything we discuss! That’s the fun part! We just do whatever we feel like at the moment! No plan, no expectations! So I would have venture a guess that I will CHOOSE NOT TO RUN for another 2 weeks! The marathon is a LONG way away! RIGHT??!?!

Vacation Guilt

So I’ve come to the conclusion that this is my summer of vacations. 2 weeks in Europe, 1 week at New Smyrna Beach, 3 weeks in Naples (one with the girls, one with the family, and the last for a beach wedding! This is a great thing for ME, but no so much for my marathon training program! I have a schedule and since June 6th, I’ve been ignoring it! Not just not running, but totally ignoring it! It’s still in the back of my head, picking at me, like an annoying insect, but it hasn’t bothered me enough to lace up my shoes and get running.

Now it’s not as though I haven’t tried to run. I have…while in Munich, yeah…it didn’t go so well! You see it was our last day and I got up early and snuck out of the apartment with my ipod and our newly purchased international cell phone (just incase). I, unfortunately, forgot to pickup the directions I had painstakingly mapped out. But I figured I had been all over this neighborhood for a week, I won’t need them. Right!

About a mile and half into the run, I realized that none of these street names looked familiar anymore. I kept thinking that the next cross street would be the one I knew. NO! This is not good! I was officially Lost in Munich! Now, yes I did have this phone, but the only person I knew to call was my sleeping husband. And I think the phone was on silent, so that would have been of no help!

I kept running and came upon a major intersection. I figured I should turn left. I’m not quite sure why. I ran a block or two and came upon a subway station, which I figured would have an area map, to show me where I am and where I want to be. WRONG! There was a map of the immediate area, a two block view. I already knew the name of the street I was on and the street I came from. Ugghhh! I could take the train, but I have no money for a ticket. Or I could try to ask someone, but it was early and my German language center of my brain was still sleeping…soundly!

So I had a decision to make…do I jump on the train and hope I don’t get caught riding without a ticket? Or go back up to the street and find my way! So I decided that I still wasn’t up to my 3 miles, so I thought I would go run my way out of being lost! As I came out of the station I noticed a Hilton Hotel just across the street. I thought…that’s an American Hotel chain, they should speak English and they should have maps. BINGO!

So I ran into the lobby and asked the nice man at the counter if he had a map, while crossing my fingers that he spoke English, or really slow German. English it was! YEAH!  He not only got me a map, he even Google mapped it for me and printed my path home! I am sure he and his buddies got a good laugh for the rest of the day! And actually so did I!

So this is why I have been a little hesitant to venture out again. I don’t like being lost! So Venice, Paris and London…no running for me! I ran at home…1 day…and now I am at New Smyrna Beach and it is REALLY HOT! No running when it’s hot! It’s not allowed! Says me! Maybe it will cool off soon!? I’ll let you know!
